The KOSPI continued its decline during intraday trading on July 4, slipping below the 3,100 mark and fluctuating in the 3,080 range.
As of 11:01 a.m., the KOSPI stood at 3,080.66, down 35.61 points or 1.14% from the previous session. The index opened at 3,122.28, up 6.01 points or 0.10%, but soon turned negative, quickly falling below the 3,100 threshold.
In the main bourse, foreign investors and institutions were net sellers of 46.5 billion won and 52.7 billion won, respectively, while retail investors were net buyers of 93.4 billion won.
In the KOSPI 200 futures market, foreign investors increased their net selling to 529.5 billion won, showing stronger selling pressure compared to early trading.
Samsung Electronics (005930), which helped drive the market higher the previous day, posted only limited gains of 0.16%.
SK hynix (000660) reversed course and was down 2.33% during intraday trading.
Defense-related stocks showed notable declines, including Hyundai Rotem (064350) down 7.39%, Poongsan (103140) falling 7.66%, and Hanwha Aerospace (012450) down 3.3%.
Shares of holding companies such as Kolon (002020) (-13.1%), HS Hyosung (487570) (-12.02%), Hanwha (000880) (-6.07%), and Hyosung (004800) (-5.8%) also traded lower, following the market's reassessment after the National Assembly passed the Commercial Act amendment.
Conversely, Korea Gas Corp. (036460) rose 11.3% and Korea Electric Power Corp. (015760) gained 6.55%, amid expectations that the amendment could lead to utility rate hikes that align with shareholder interests.
Among major large-cap stocks, LG Energy Solution (373220) declined 2.04%, KB Financial Group (105560) fell 2.82%, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180) dropped 4.31%. Meanwhile, Samsung Biologics (207940) and Celltrion (068270) gained 0.38% and 2.67%, respectively.
By sector, losses were seen in securities (-3.33%), transportation equipment (-2.41%), and machinery (-1.05%). On the other hand, gains were posted in electricity and gas (+5.95%), transportation and storage (+1.55%), and pharmaceuticals (+0.82%).
