On August 7, shares of Kakao (035720) surged following the company’s announcement of its highest-ever quarterly results.

According to the Korea Exchange, as of 11:33 a.m., Kakao’s stock was trading at 60,900 won, up 7.22% from the previous day’s close.

The sharp rise appears to have been driven by investor optimism following the company’s record-breaking second-quarter earnings.

In a regulatory filing released earlier in the day, Kakao reported consolidated revenue of 2.0283 trillion won for the second quarter, marking a 1% increase from the same period last year. Operating profit jumped 39% year-on-year to 185.9 billion won. Both revenue and operating profit set new quarterly records for the company.

By business segment, revenue from the platform division rose 10% year-on-year to 1.0552 trillion won, while revenue from the content division fell 7% to 973.1 billion won.

Within the platform division, Talk Biz revenue increased 7% to 542.1 billion won. Kakao noted, “Revenue from business messages grew 16%,” adding, “With the expansion of various message templates, advertisers now have more options in message formats and use cases, which is expected to support long-term revenue growth.”

Commerce revenue from services such as the “Gift” and “Talk Deal” features on KakaoTalk also rose 10% to 221.2 billion won. The company attributed the growth to an increase in users purchasing products through the “Gift” function on the platform.

Revenue from other platform services—including Kakao Mobility and Kakao Pay—jumped 21% year-on-year to 434.8 billion won. Kakao said that the expansion of its parking and quick delivery services contributed positively to overall revenue growth.

Investor sentiment was also buoyed by expectations surrounding the launch of a stablecoin task force (TF) at the group level.

Kakao Group is reportedly forming the TF with its core affiliates—Kakao, Kakao Pay, and Kakao Bank—at the center.

The company is also planning a major overhaul of its flagship messaging platform, KakaoTalk.

Kakao CEO Shin-shina stated, “The upcoming revamp of KakaoTalk will help establish a virtuous cycle where increased platform traffic naturally translates into revenue,” adding, “In the second half of this year, we plan to sequentially launch a variety of AI-powered services integrated with KakaoTalk, ushering in a new era of AI for all Koreans.”

*[KOSPI] Kakao(035720) is a platform company that engages in commerce, games, and content, starting with KakaoTalk, a messenger service that has the largest market share in Korea. The market capitalization is 25.066 trillion won (as of August 6, 2025, closing price).
