The KOSPI climbed on August 7, recovering to the 3,220 level, as investor sentiment was lifted by Apple-related gains despite the implementation of reciprocal tariffs under the Trump administration.

The benchmark index closed at 3,227.68, up 29.54 points or 0.92%, marking its fourth consecutive session of gains. It was the first time in five trading days that the index closed above the 3,200 level, last recorded on July 31.

The KOSPI opened at 3,214.81, up 16.67 points or 0.52%, briefly retreating to 3,200.28 before rebounding to the 3,210 level. The index maintained its upward momentum even after the U.S. reciprocal tariffs took effect at 1:01 p.m. KST, and further extended gains by the end of the session.

As of 3:30 p.m., the Korean won was trading at 1,381.2 per U.S. dollar in the Seoul foreign exchange market, down 8.3 won from the previous day.

In the main board, institutional investors were net buyers of 109 billion won, while retail and foreign investors sold a net 196.5 billion won and 17.5 billion won, respectively. However, foreign investors turned net buyers in the KOSPI 200 futures market with purchases totaling 153.3 billion won.

Korean equities rallied, led by Apple-related stocks, after news broke overnight that Apple would invest an additional 100 billion dollars in the United States.

Although U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on semiconductors, he also suggested that companies building factories within the U.S. may be exempt—fueling expectations that Korean firms with U.S.-based facilities may avoid major tariff burdens.

The South Korean presidential office helped ease concerns, stating that the Korean government had secured “most-favored-nation” treatment in relation to Trump’s tariff remarks.

Despite the official implementation of the reciprocal tariffs at 1:01 p.m. KST, the market remained stable, as tariff-related risks had already been largely priced in.

Lee Kyung-min, an analyst at Daishin Securities, commented, “Apple’s announcement of a 100 billion dollar investment in the U.S. served as a strong tailwind for the Korean market. While President Trump hinted at 100% tariffs on semiconductors, the move is largely seen as targeting Chinese companies. For Korean firms with U.S.-based production plans, the news reduced uncertainty and is seen as a potential positive.”

Among large-cap stocks, Samsung Electronics (005930) rose 2.47%, closing above 70,000 won for the first time in five sessions following reports that it would produce Apple’s next-generation chips at its U.S. foundry. SK hynix (000660) also advanced 1.35%, ending in the 260,000-won range.

Apple-related suppliers BH (090460) and LG Innotek (011070) gained 1.80% and 0.57%, respectively. Hyundai Motor (005380) rose 0.95% after announcing a joint development of five vehicle models with General Motors (GM).

The index opened at 805.27, up 1.78 points or 0.22%, traded within a narrow range, then turned slightly higher, maintaining gains even after the tariff activation and rising further toward the close.

In the KOSDAQ market, retail investors were net buyers of 91.4 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors recorded net sales of 53.9 billion won and 21.9 billion won, respectively.
