Shares of SK hynix (000660) broke through the 400,000-won mark for the first time in history on October 2, fueled by news of its collaboration with OpenAI to build global AI infrastructure.
As of 9:45 a.m., SK hynix was trading at 400,000 won, up 11.11% from the previous session.
The sharp rally comes after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with President Lee Jae-myung on October 1, accompanied by Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won. Ahead of the meeting, Samsung Electronics (005930) and SK hynix confirmed an agreement to supply high-performance memory semiconductors for OpenAI’s “Stargate” project.
Stargate, backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, involves a $500 billion investment over five years to build AI data centers across the United States. OpenAI projects wafer demand could reach as high as 900,000 units per month during the project, nearly double current production capacity.
In addition, SK plans to construct a large-scale data center with OpenAI in South Jeolla Province, while Samsung Electronics will build a similar facility in Pohang. Together, the two projects are being described as a “Korean-style Stargate,” with dedicated OpenAI data centers in both the southwest and southeast regions of the country.
Meanwhile, shares of Samsung Electronics also crossed the 90,000-won mark in regular trading for the first time in four years and nine months.
