As of 9:18 a.m., the benchmark index stood at 3,630.77, up 46.22 points (1.29%) from the previous session. The KOSPI opened 19.57 points (0.55%) higher at 3,604.12 and quickly surpassed its previous intraday record of 3,617.86 set on October 10. By 9:31 a.m., the index had climbed as high as 3,646.77.
In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the Korean won opened at 1,426.5 per dollar, up 0.7 won from the previous day.
On the main bourse, retail investors net bought 264 billion won, while foreign investors added 20.4 billion won, helping lift the index. Institutions, however, were net sellers of 302.1 billion won.
In the KOSPI 200 futures market, both individuals and foreigners posted net sales of 90 billion won and 173.5 billion won, respectively, while institutions net bought 232.7 billion won.
Overnight, Wall Street rallied as both the U.S. and China expressed their willingness to continue trade negotiations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.29%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite gained 1.56% and 2.21%, respectively.
Tech stocks led the rebound, with Broadcom surging 9.88% after announcing an agreement with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, to collaborate on the development of proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) chips.
Adding further momentum, Samsung Electronics (005930) posted stronger-than-expected third-quarter preliminary earnings before the market opened.
The company reported an operating profit of 12.1 trillion won on a consolidated basis for the third quarter, up 31.8% year-on-year. This figure exceeded the market consensus of 10.3043 trillion won compiled by Yonhap Infomax by about 17.4%.
Following the upbeat results, Samsung Electronics traded 2.79% higher at 95,900 won, after touching 96,000 won earlier in the session to set a new 52-week high. SK Hynix (000660) also advanced 4.10% to 432,000 won.
Among other major blue chips, performances were mixed. LG Energy Solution (373220) gained 2.36%, Hanwha Aerospace (012450) rose 0.60%, Doosan Enerbility (034020) added 0.39%, Hyundai Motor (005380) climbed 0.34%, Kia (000270) increased 0.30%, and Samsung C&T (028260) rose 0.25%.
Meanwhile, Shinhan Financial Group (055550) fell 1.14%, KB Financial Group (105560) dropped 0.81%, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180) slipped 0.39%, and Samsung Biologics (207940) edged down 0.29%.
By industry, most sectors were higher, led by electronics (2.97%), metals (2.62%), insurance (1.69%), utilities (1.58%), machinery and equipment (0.95%), construction (0.60%), and chemicals (0.55%). On the other hand, culture and entertainment (-1.30%), telecommunications (-1.18%), and textiles and apparel (-0.54%) declined.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ rose 9.74 points (1.13%) to 870.23. The index opened 4.88 points (0.57%) higher at 865.37 and continued to strengthen.
