The KOSPI moderated gains around the 3,620 level on October 14 after hitting a new intraday all-time high earlier in the morning.
As of 11:10 a.m., the benchmark index stood at 3,616.53, up 31.98 points (0.89%) from the previous close. The index opened 19.57 points (0.55%) higher at 3,604.12, immediately breaking the previous intraday record of 3,617.86 set on October 10. It then climbed to 3,646.77 around 9:32 a.m. before stabilizing near the 3,620 level.
In the main bourse, foreign investors bought a net 329.5 billion won, pushing the index higher. Retail investors, who had shown strong early buying, turned net sellers amid profit-taking, with 141.1 billion won in net sales, while institutions also sold a net 227.1 billion won.
In the KOSPI 200 futures market, institutions and individuals were net buyers of 360.9 billion won and 1.7 billion won, respectively, while foreigners sold a net 367.7 billion won.
Overnight, Wall Street rebounded as the U.S. and China reaffirmed their commitment to continuing trade negotiations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.29%, the S&P 500 rose 1.56%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 2.21%.
The rebound in U.S. tech stocks spilled over into the Korean market, while Samsung Electronics (005930)’s stronger-than-expected preliminary third-quarter results, announced before the opening bell, further lifted investor sentiment.
Samsung Electronics reported an operating profit of 12.1 trillion won for the third quarter, up 31.8% year-on-year, beating the market consensus of 10.3 trillion won by about 17.4%.
The stock was trading 0.11% higher at 93,400 won, after briefly surging to 97,500 won, surpassing its previous all-time high of 96,800 won from January 11, 2021. However, much of the early gain was later pared back, reflecting profit-taking and a “sell-on-news” reaction following the earnings announcement.
LG Energy Solution (373220) jumped 7.22% to 386,000 won after reports that it had resumed dispatching key personnel to its joint battery plant with Hyundai Motor Group in Georgia, the HL-GA Battery Company. SK Hynix (000660) also gained 2.59% to 425,750 won.
Other large-cap stocks were mixed. Hyundai Motor (005380) rose 2.52%, Kia (000270) added 2.27%, and Samsung Biologics (207940) gained 0.88%, while Shinhan Financial Group (055550) fell 1.85%, Samsung C&T (028260) lost 1.34%, Doosan Enerbility (034020) declined 0.84%, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180) slipped 0.77%.
By sector, metals (+6.34%), utilities (+3.99%), insurance (+1.67%), electronics (+1.43%), chemicals (+1.16%), and transportation/storage (+0.99%) advanced, while entertainment/culture (–1.74%), telecom (–1.20%), medical/precision (–1.01%), and textiles/apparel (–0.98%) declined.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ index was down 1.34 points (0.16%) at 859.15, after opening 4.88 points (0.57%) higher at 865.37 before turning lower.
