Defense-related shares gained in early trading on October 15 after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of potential “forcible disarmament” of Hamas if the militant group fails to lay down its weapons.
As of 9:22 a.m., Hyundai Rotem (064350) was trading at 212,000 won, up 4.46 percent from the previous session. Hanwha Systems (272210) rose 1.75 percent, LIG Nex1 (079550) gained 1.45 percent, Hanwha Aerospace (012450) added 0.54 percent, and Poongsan (103140) advanced 0.47 percent.
The rally came after President Trump said on October 14 (local time), “If Hamas does not disarm itself, we will disarm them. It will not take long, and it will likely be violent.” He added, “They said they would disarm themselves. If they don’t, we will do it for them.”
Earlier, Israel and Hamas had agreed to a ceasefire proposal presented by President Trump, leading to the release of 20 Israeli hostages held in Gaza. In return, Israel freed more than 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
The second phase of the ceasefire agreement includes Hamas’s disarmament, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the establishment of a Palestinian civilian government. However, the two sides remain divided over the issue of disarmament.
Hamas also agreed to return the remains of 28 hostages, including one abducted prior to the Gaza conflict, but so far has delivered only four bodies.
