On October 15, the KOSPI rebounded reclaiming the 3,600 level in intraday trading despite escalating tensions between the United States and China following Beijing’s decision to tighten export controls on rare earth materials.
As of 9:28 a.m., the KOSPI was trading at 3,596.33, up 34.52 points (0.97%) from the previous session. The index opened 18.83 points (0.53%) higher at 3,580.64, climbed to 3,607.53, and then eased slightly around the 3,590 level.
In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the Korean won opened at 1,429.1 won per dollar, down 1.9 won from the previous close.
In the main bourse, institutional investors were net buyers of 767 billion won, with nearly half of that (281 billion won) coming from pension funds. Foreign investors and retail investors sold 522 billion won and 407 billion won, respectively.
In the KOSPI 200 futures market, foreign investors showed a net buying position of 1.38 trillion won, while individuals and institutions posted net selling positions of 1.36 trillion won and 256 billion won, respectively.
Overnight on Wall Street, the three major U.S. indexes closed mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.44%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.16% and 0.76%, respectively.
U.S. markets opened sharply lower following reports of Chinese sanctions on the U.S. subsidiaries of Hanwha Ocean (042660) — the same news that triggered a sell-off in Seoul the previous day. Although optimism over renewed trade negotiations briefly lifted sentiment, investor confidence weakened again after President Donald Trump criticized China’s suspension of U.S. soybean imports, saying Washington was “considering halting trade in cooking oil and other commodities” with Beijing.
Semiconductor and AI-related stocks declined, with NVIDIA and Broadcom falling 4.4% and 3.52%, respectively.
Reflecting the global tech weakness, SK Hynix (000660) slipped 0.36% to 410,000 won, while Samsung Electronics (005930) gained 1.64% to 93,100 won.
Among large-cap stocks, performances were mixed. Samsung Biologics (207940) rose 7.30%, Doosan Enerbility (034020) gained 6.73%, Samsung C&T (028260) advanced 2.93%, Shinhan Financial Group (055550) climbed 2.49%, and KB Financial Group (105560) was up 1.89%. On the other hand, LG Energy Solution (373220) fell 2.08%, Naver (035420) declined 0.39%, Hyundai Motor (005380) edged down 0.22%, and Kia (000270) slipped 0.20%.
By industry, machinery and equipment advanced 4.69%, pharmaceuticals rose 3.90%, construction increased 3.13%, medical and precision instruments gained 1.51%, and non-metallic minerals climbed 1.30%. In contrast, metals dropped 1.72%, insurance declined 1.04%, and IT services fell 0.19%.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ was up 3.03 points (0.36%) at 850.99. The index opened 5.21 points (0.61%) higher at 853.17 and was seeking direction.
On the secondary market, individuals and institutions bought 70.8 billion won and 13.2 billion won, respectively, while foreign investors sold 83.3 billion won.
