On November 27, the KOSPI trimmed earlier gains after the Bank of Korea’s decision to keep its policy rate unchanged weakened expectations for further rate cuts, leading to back-and-forth trading around the 4,000 level.
As of 11:13 a.m., the KOSPI stood at 3,998.79, up 37.92 points (0.96%) from the previous close. The index opened 28.58 points (0.72%) higher at 3,989.45 and briefly reclaimed the 4,000 mark for the first time in five sessions, climbing to as high as 4,023.42 before retreating.
Foreign investors and institutions posted net purchases of 256 billion won and 297.5 billion won, respectively, while retail investors recorded 556.8 billion won in net selling on the main bourse. Foreign investors also remained net buyers in KOSPI200 futures, adding 85.4 billion won.
Earlier in the morning, the Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Board held its rate-setting meeting and left the benchmark rate unchanged at 2.50%.
The central bank also raised its growth outlook for this year and next to 1.0% and 1.8%, respectively, from the previous projections of 0.9% and 1.6%.
The policy statement softened its language regarding potential additional rate cuts, leaving room for interpretation that further monetary easing may not occur depending on economic and financial conditions.
Semiconductor shares such as Samsung Electronics(005930) (+1.22%) and SK hynix(000660) (+4.20%) advanced, while LG Energy Solution(373220) (+1.61%), Samsung Biologics(207940) (+1.70%), and Doosan Enerbility(034020) (+1.54%) also traded higher.
In contrast, Hyundai Motor(005380) (-0.38%), Celltrion(068270) (-0.27%), and Samsung C&T(028260) weakened.
NAVER(035420), which finalized a decision to acquire Dunamu the previous day, extended losses, falling 2.66%.
By sector, electronics (+1.81%), entertainment & culture (+1.56%), and insurance (+1.23%) gained, while IT services (-1.41%) and securities (-0.44%) declined.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ was trading at 881.63, up 4.31 points (0.49%) from the previous session. The index opened 2.12 points (0.24%) higher at 879.44 and rose to 884.00 before slightly trimming gains.
Alteogen(196170) (+2.90%), ABL Bio(298380) (+0.46%), Rainbow Robotics(277810) (+2.81%), Kolon TissueGene(950160) (+0.15%), and PharmaResearch(214450) traded higher.
Meanwhile, EcoPro BM(247540) (-0.60%), EcoPro(086520) (-0.12%), LigaChem Biosciences(141080) (-2.02%), HLB(028300) (-0.54%), and Boronoi(310210) (-3.12%) were among the notable decliners.
