Market Today[Closed]KOSPI Falls Over 1% Amid Fears of U.S. Recession

The KOSPI fell more than 1% on March 11, driven by concerns over a potential U.S. recession.


The KOSPI closed at 2537.60, down 32.79 points(1.28%) from the previous trading day. The index opened lower at 2516.69, compared to the previous day’s closing of 2570.39.


In the KOSPI market, foreign and institutional investors were net sellers, with foreign investors selling 363.6 billion won and institutions selling 236.8 billion won. However, individual investors showed a net buying of 491.5 billion won. 


Most sectors fell, including transportation and warehousing, electricity and gas, construction, metals, transportation equipment and parts, chemicals, distribution, and machinery and equipment.


Among the top-cap stocks, losses were more prevalent, with Hyundai Mobis(012330) and POSCO Holdings(005490) dropping over 4%. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(329180) and Hanwha Aerospace(012450) fell by more than 3%. LG Energy Solution(373220) and Hanwha Ocean(042660) declined by around 2%, and stocks such as KB Financial Group(105560), Samsung Biologics(207940), NAVER(035420), Hyundai Motor Company(005380), Samsung Electronics(005930), and SK hynix(000660) also ended lower. In contrast, Celltrion(068270) and Kia(000270) saw slight gains and closed higher.


Meanwhile, total trading volume stood at 370.32 million shares, with a trading value of 9.479 trillion won. One stock reached the upper limit of the trading range, and 181 stocks advanced, while 733 stocks declined. There were no stocks hitting the lower limit, and 28 stocks closed flat.


The KOSDAQ index closed at 721.50, down 4.32 points(0.60%) from the previous day. The KOSDAQ also opened lower, following the negative sentiment from the U.S. market, with an initial drop of over 2%.


Individual and foreign investors were net buyers, purchasing 48.7 billion won and 45.4 billion won, respectively. Institutional investors net sold 87 billion won.


Most sectors ended lower, with construction, finance, entertainment and culture, and metals showing losses of around 1%. However, machinery and equipment, communications, and pharmaceuticals saw marginal gains of less than 1%.


Among the top-cap stocks, losses prevailed, with Alteogen(196170), EcoPro BM(247540), and EcoPro(086520) closing lower. In contrast, Hugel(145020) and Kolon TissueGene(950160) showed strength.


The KOSDAQ’s total trading volume reached 74.697 million shares, with a trading value of 7.043 trillion won. Four stocks hit the upper price limit, while 458 stocks advanced and 1,169 stocks declined. 93 stocks remained flat.
