HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (009540) has secured a 2.4 trillion-won contract to build ultra-large container vessels, reinforcing its position in the global commercial ship market with its advanced eco-friendly fuel propulsion technology.
On June 10, the company announced that it recently signed a contract with an Asia-based shipping company to construct 8 units of 15,900 TEU container carriers. (1 TEU is equivalent to one 20-foot container.)
The total contract value is approximately 2.4 trillion won. The ships will be constructed at the Ulsan shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (329180) and delivered sequentially to the client by the second half of 2028.
Each vessel will measure 366 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 30.3 meters in height, classifying them as ultra-large container ships. They will be powered by dual-fuel engines capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Among the 44 container ships HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has secured orders for this year, 26—around 60%—feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion systems.
A company representative stated, “As environmental regulations on maritime emissions continue to tighten, orders for ships equipped with eco-friendly fuel propulsion systems are on the rise,” adding, “With our differentiated green shipbuilding technology, we are committed to leading the decarbonization of the global shipping industry.”
*[KOSPI]HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering(009540) engages in shipbuilding, offshore plant, engine machinery, and green energy businesses. Market capitalization is 22.72 trillion won(as of June 9, 2025, closing price).
